This article is a year old but just came across it. Its really astounding how some of these 'safari drivers/guides' blatantly rip off these Masaai villages especially considering how most drivers earn far more than the average Kenyan. You've also got to ask - how dumb are the Masaai??! And the really BIG question, the elephant in the room and potentially Kenya's greatest unreported scandal, is where the hell is all the money from the Mara's tourism receipts going? What exactly is Narok County Council doing with it...?? Hmmm......
QUOTE
So far the system has benefited five Maasai villages, which were losing around $11,500 a month, enough to install a borehole and get access to clean water. But overturning the corruption has not been easy. “Drivers have a lot of power here and when challenged can threaten to ensure tourists only see grass - in other words no wildlife - when they go on their safari drives in the Masai Mara Game Reserve.”
