10 years ago, I didn't know that am about to experience one of the best holidays in my life at “The end of the world” And it was really one of the best holidays that I have ever had.

Lake Turkana - Lake Rudolf – 230 km long.. The lake lies on a moonlike Environment of breathtaking fascination. And not to forget it has a legend History. On it’s east coast, by Koobi Fora, Richard Leakey discovered in 1972, the 2.2 million years old Homo habilis skull. A few years later another sensational discovery was made. A 1.6 million years Homo erectus sapiens, today’s Humanbeing. Since then there is no doughty that, East Africa is the cradle of mankind. The lake is also home for tropical Birds, Crocodiles and Hippos. In the Azures blue undisturbed water-world lives what were there for. Fish, the Nile perch,Which has a record of over 300 pounds. There are also Tilapias and Tigerfish.

We flew on a Sunday morning from Nairobi to Turkana. We stayed at the Turkana fishing lodge.

I went there with a group of 5 Industry Directors from Germany to try the fishing up there.

The Clients were typical sport fishermen, the nervous facial muscle ticks, Impatience, thick cigars and very much wanting to fight with a fat fish.

We were welcome at the lodge, which lay at the shore of the lake, by many local kids who were half naked, and they could speak German and Norwegian. They spoke Norwegian because there was a Norwegian organisation building a fishing project there a few years before we arrived. We could see the huge fishing trailer in the middle of the lake, rusted and half sunk in because it never got to work.

There was a Turkana village near the lodge. In the first night we hardly could sleep because of the drumming coming from there. We asked Peter, our Kenyan fishing guide to take us there to see how such a Turkana night looks like. It was a circumcision fest. They were all in their costumes and dancing around a fire. We found out that the people lived like in the Stone Age, well, nearly. They didn’t have any furniture or utensils. The only thing we could see were the Kimbo cans.

The next day, we started our Fishing. We got in a professional fishing boot fitted with everything we needed. We wanted to get the Monster Nile perch. Drilling one in wont take you less than 30 minutes. You swear to hell, your muscles are shaking and you are shivering all over while the fish jumps out of the water fighting with you. Then you get the fish in the boot. The biggest sweat water fish in the world – an event - My German clients were very impressed and happy with me.

On the second day, with the sun so glimmering hot, I decided we should make a little safari around the lake to avoid sitting in the boot again for some of my clients had sunburn already. We got in Landrovers with camping gears, food and a few cooks, and then drove off on an overnight tour.

The Land rovers rolled over the black the lava stones through an environment that looks dead, no trees, no animals, and no bushes. The only sign of life you could see was a Malibu, which was circling high above us, in the cloudless blue sky, from which the sun shined on us mercilessly. Suddenly a huge mountain would appear in the horizon. But then, it would disappear and the the plateau is abruptly there again.   We camped on the other side of the lake in the evening. We made our camp and started enjoying the best sunset I have ever seeing. The cooks started grilling meat and fish for us and I was so happy till one very heavy man started complaining - The water was not good, the meat was hard, and he needed a shower and how come we are camping? He didn’t pay his holiday to lazy around like a hippy! And so on and so forth. Till one of the others rescued me by telling him to shut up.

The next day, we drove back to the Lodge. Toured the incredible Crocodile hatching island, the Central Island. It is believed to be the biggest Crocodile hatchery in the world. It looks like a scene in one of the Alien films.

We fished for two more days then flew back to Nairobi…very black. But Happy. Even the complainer was punching me on the shoulder with gratitude.

Mbaka that sounds great!! Except for the complainer but what's a holiday without just one eh?  :fight:

I could almost feel the warmth.. a question when you arrange these trips do both you and your husband go..? what about safari companies... do you use the same ones or look for an expert in every region or facet of the trip?

Maybe you could do an article as what's expected by your clients as in gratuities, what is acceptable

Some do's & don'ts about going on Safari

Yes you are right. there is always something complain about. Especially if someone doesn't want to look defeated.

We usually use the same tour operators. It is importand because most of our clients are regulars.

We are a Tour operater specialized on sportfishing travelling so, Safary comes after. We have more clients who would rather play wild wild west in the British Colombia than drive with a tourist bus through the Tsavo.
We Hire a motorhome or Camper from Vancover. Drive through the wilderness of British Colombia till to the Skeena River deep in the Rocky mountains. There, the fishermen fight for the Fat silver Salmon with the bears  :hehe:

We ususally travel with groups to new Territories. My husband gets to go alone later to most of our Hardcore areas like Turkana, Alaska and India etc. I used to Travel more before, but after 15 years, i just couldn't do it anymore. Too much homelessness, always on the way.

I might write an article here soon, when i have time.

That sounds so interesting.. I saw the Rockie Mountains for the first time a short time ago and I was amazed how beautiful they were.. I felt as though we had driven into a painted picture.. This was from the American side nonetheless I was just sitting in the car with my mouth gapping open at the site.

I have friends who regularly go to Alaska for the fishing, they fly into some remote areas stay camp  you know boys will be boys hihi.gif

I have always been facinated with India.. Again I have friends living in Bombay and have been invited several times to tour with them.. I would love to see some of the very old sites before Colonialism in India, explore some of the remote areas.. see some of the lesser known areas and beaches..

Who knows maybe I'll get there too someday soon..  :)
